EVANGELIO

Pedro, siempre entusiasmado, dijo: ¿A quién iremos? Sólo Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Y se quedó con Él.

¿Y nosotros?

Me llamas Señor y no me obedeces,

Me llamas Luz y no me ves,

Me llamas Camino y no lo andas,

Me llamas Vida y no me deseas,

Me llamas Sabio y no me sigues,

Me llamas Justo y no me amas,

Me llamas Rico y no me pides,

Me llamas Bondad y no confías en mí,

Me llamas Noble y no me sirves,

Me llamas Poderoso y no me honras,

Me llamas Justo y no me temes,

¿A quién iremos?

Me llamas Señor y no me obedeces.

Me llamas Luz y no me ves.

Me llamas Camino y no lo andas.

Me llamas Vida y no me deseas.

Me llamas Sabio y no me sigues.

Me llamas Rico y no me pides.

Me llamas Misericordioso y no te fías.

Me llamas Noble y no me sirves.

Me llamas Poderoso y no me honras.

Me llamas Justo y no me temes.

Si te condeno no me culpes.

HOMILÍA 3

It only happens in New York.

The leader of the youth group of my former parish was a very talented and ambitious young man.

He loved to preach, he played the guitar and he invited preachers from other christian denominations to preach at their meetings, and then one day he decided to start his own church. He rented a building down the street and there he started his own church, just like that.

The only things you need to become a new Moses are: a basement, a Bible, and a new suit.

In my walking tours around Harlem I used to stop in front of every church, -big or small-.

I paid attention to three facts:

The biblical name of the church.
The name of its founder.
The year the church opened its doors.

It blew my mind to learn that some churches were opened, believe it or not, not the year before but only the day before.

It only happens in New York.

I have read that over 600 new denominations have been formed in USA since 1965 alone.

In Europe, Spain, my country, we need not new churches, most people stopped attending church many years ago, but people still have a connection with the church: baptisms, first communions, weddings...they retain social ties with religion, but they are not connected with God.

Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to leave?”

Many disciples have left not only the church, but they have lost the faith in Jesus Christ.

To leave the church is a small tragedy, to leave Jesus Christ is a big tragedy, it is the only mortal sin.

The story of the christian decline and the rise of the “nones”, the millennials, is the story of today's gospel. “Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said, “this saying is hard; who can accept it?”

Yesterday Jesus' disciples, who were Jews, could not accept his teachings, "I am the bread of life and unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you will not have life in you", because they were against the Law of Moses.

Today people quit Jesus for all sorts of reasons, they do not get what they want when they want it. Yes, it is true that religion has many side effects, but we have to tell the millennials and all who have left the church that faith in Jesus has no side effects, none, zero, nada.

We have to proclaim that to believe is not to agree with a hundred teological statements, but to give one's heart to God.

We have to tell them that the church is not a beautiful building or a set of beliefs learned in our mother's womb. The church is the people of God seeking to understand, follow, and bear witness to the presence of Jesus in our lives. People can abandon a building, but God does not abandon any of them.

Which of us has not at one time or another wondered whether to stay or to leave, whether we have believed in vain?

To doubt is healthy and necessary, but to know where to look is essential. Peter knew where to look. He looked to Jesus and kept his eyes fastened on him.

"Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life".

Jesus, I have decided to stay in your church. I have decided to follow you, no turning back.

HOMILÍA 4

It was 1924. The Olympics were being held in Paris. It was the first Olympics that the sport of canoe was added to the list of games.

The American team was favored to win. American Bill Havens was part of that first canoe race team. He was excited beyond words to be part of this experience.

But there was a problem. Bill's wife was pregnant and it seemed clear that she would give birth to their first child about the same time that Bill would be competing in Paris.

In a time when there were no jet airliners and only slow moving ships, Bill faced a dilemma: go to Paris and miss the birth of his child or stay home. Bill's wife insisted he go. She knew how many years he had worked for this. For Bill the decision was easy. He stayed home. He considered being with his wife a higher priority than going to Paris.

The United States won the gold. Bill's wife was late in giving birth. In fact, she was so late that Bill could have easily gone to Paris and made it back in time. People said: “What a shame”.

Bill said he had no regrets. His commitment to his wife was more important. It would always be more important.

One of the most challenging aspects of life is commitment. It is a choice. It is a decision. It locks us into a pattern of conduct that determines all or part of our life. It is commitment that is at the heart of today's readings.

Joshua proclaims that he and his family will serve the Lord. St. Paul, in a reading that is too often misunderstood, speaks of mutual respect and love of husband and wife. And Peter sums it up nicely when he proclaims his commitment of faith and says: “Lord, to whom shall we turn?”

Commitment demands a great deal. Commitment demands 100% of ourselves...not 50 or 70%.

To commit ourselves is to put other things behind us in order that we might be faithful...faithful to God and to each other. Commitment is not always easy. But commitment transforms our lives. It is only commitment that opens us to achieving goals and reaping awards that would never be ours without our willingness to commit ourselves.

Allow me to return to the story of Bill Havens:

It is now 28 years later. It is 1952. It is time for the Olympic in Helsinki, Finland.

The son that was born to Bill Havens and his wife is now competing and he sends his father this cablegram which I quote exactly:

“Dad, I won
I'm bringing home the gold medal you lost
while waiting for me to be born”.

The commitment of Bill Havens became the inspiration for his son. It also becomes an inspiration for anyone who hears his story. It teaches us that our own commitments, and especially our commitment to Christ and to each other, are the inspiration that we bring to countless people that we touch by our actions and our lives.
